The Problem : Non-Organic Old Tasteless Indian Vegetables

The Vegetables that are available in Indian Grocery Stores do not come from India.

They are largely grown in Central America to keep the prices low, mainly because of the lower labor costs.

These vegetables are harvested weeks earlier before the vegetables have reached their prime so that they can last the long journey.

This generally causes a lack of taste. Moreover, the hybrid seed varieties are selected for durability, production, and appearance at the expense of flavor. The treatments mandated to kill pests can further degrade flavor or texture. It might seem logical that older produce is also less nutritious and lasts less. It also spoils easier and earlier due to the factory preservation techniques used.
The larger problem is of the use of fertilizers and pesticides in growing these vegetables in large scale commercial farms. Studies after studies have shown the harmful health effects on us and our family.

Our Solution : Heirloom Organic Locally Grown
Understanding this problem, the farm owner has personally sourced heirloom (ancient) seed varieties directly from farmers in India with a focus on taste and originality.

With their partners in India - small farmers, small scale breeders, and local seed growers, they have been able to source not only the Desi (heirloom) seeds of standard normal vegetables like Bottle Gourd, Bitter Melon, Eggplants, chili, Ridge gourd, tomatoes, okra, dosakkai, etc. but have also been able to source many unique vegetable seeds from different regions of India.
Gopal Farm NY is now probably the largest repository of Indian Heirloom Vegetable seeds and they continue to grow them each year. We are hoping that seeing the enthusiastic usage of these local desi vegetables in the USA, local farmers, Chefs, and households in India will start growing and using them more thereby reviving the usage of healthy flavorful local seasonal vegetables.

Since 2016, they have been trialing them at the NY farm using better than Organic practices. They use a combination of ancient Indian Agriculture techniques as well as modern implements and knowledge.
They have been grateful that many renowned Chefs of NYC have trialed them and included them in their seasonal recipes.
Some Vegetables grow well, and some do not. So they try to find a close replacement from another region in India. Due to the cold climate hence shorter growing period we test various techniques to grow them longer. The high cost of Labor in USA compared to India is another constraint.

These vegetables are then picked when they are just ripe, largely only a day before they are delivered to you or you could even come and pick them up yourself!

Or you could come with your family and help plant them at the beginning of the season!

Previous year's CSA box receivers consistently list three reasons to continue to source their weekly Indian Vegetables from us:

1. Taste and nutrition as the most important reason
2. Family's health by sourcing their Organic Indian vegetables from a local farm.
3. Convenience of home deliveries.

We have also partnered with an Organic Farm in Florida to grow Organic Vegetables and Fruits for the beginning and end season months when it is too cold here in NY to grow warm weather Indian Vegetables. With our contracted truck, we are able to bring the harvested vegetables from our FL farm within 2 days to our NY farm keeping the flavor and freshness intact.

Gopal Farm CSA vs Traditional CSAs

The traditional Model of CSA Boxes is that the farmer puts in each Member Box a portion of what is being grown seasonally. Members generally have not had much choice in selecting the boxes.  Their CSA model Mixes Choice with traditional CSA advantages. They are trying to mirror the shopping experience of going to a normal Organic Grocery Store while connecting the members to a local farm and its farming community.

Prohibition of Onion and Garlic in Several Cultures The article [5] gives a good review on how onions and garlics were traditionally prohibited in many cultures around the world for similar reasons. The Taoists realized thousands of years ago that plants of the allium family were detri- mental to humans in their healthy state. In his writings, one sage Tsang-Tsze described the Alliums as the “five fragrant or spicy scented vegetables” - that each have a detri- mental effect on one of the following five organs - liver, spleen, lungs, kidneys, and heart. Specifically, onions are harmful to the lungs, garlic to the heart, leeks to the spleen, chives to the liver and spring onions to the kidneys. Tsang-Tsze said that these pungent veg- etables contain five different kinds of enzymes which cause “reactions of repulsive breath, extra-foul odour from perspiration and bowel movements, and lead to lewd indulgences, enhance agitations, anxieties and aggressiveness,” especially when eaten raw. Similar things are described in Ayurveda. As well as producing offensive breath and body odour, these (allium) plants induce aggravation, agitation, anxiety and aggression. Thus they are harmful physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. Even when garlic is used as food in Chinese culture it is considered harmful to the stomach, liver and eyes, and a cause of dizziness and scattered energy when consumed in immoderate amounts. Onion and Garlic was never adopted into traditional Japanese cuisine and was shunned by Zen masters. Reiki practitioners explain that garlic and onions are among the first substances to be expelled from a person’s system along with tobacco, alcohol and pharmaceutical medica- tions. This makes it apparent that allium plants have a negative effect on the human body and should be avoided for health reasons. Buddhists, Vaisnavas and Jains completey avoid onions and garlics in any form. An old Turkish legend explains that when Satan was thrown out of heaven, garlic sprouted where he first placed his left foot, and onions grew where he placed his right foot. The Greek citizenry, especially the aristocracy, firmly rejected garlic and found its smell repugnant. Anyone smelling of garlic was considered vulgar and was prevented from enter-

Note

Because of all your these above reasons Onion and Garlic are not part of Jain vegetables farm box.
